WEHHS's goal is to link surplus with need, by shipping surplus medical and educational supplies to developing countries across the globe. WEHHS also strives to create a cultural exchange with each international community we work with, by sponsoring indigenous artists to perform for our own community in the Bay Area.
It is our belief that this synergistic health and cultural exchange will be mutually beneficial to people of both countries, and foster a continuing international awareness and exchange.
Research indicates that US hospitals throw away an estimated $6.25 billion dollars of unused medical equipment and supplies each year. Due to strict US medical regulations, much of this viable surplus cannot be used, and merely goes to waste. Furthermore, disposing of these products causes significant financial and environmental burdens on the US.
In many developing countries, where healthcare is not only limited but in many areas almost non-existent, these medical supplies are invaluable and scarce. Many suffer from diseases that can be easily eliminated or lessened simply through proper health education and basic medical care - but, without the availability of these tools, they are left helpless.
