OAKLAND, CA – The Oakland School for the Arts, Oakland’s premier arts academy, is pleased to announce A Night in Africa. This public performance is a cooperative fundraiser with World Exchange for Health and Human Services, an Oakland based medical organization that sends medical supplies to developing communities around the world.
A Night in Africa features the music of Baba Ken & the Afro-Groove Connexion. An Oakland resident hailing from Nigeria, Baba Ken and his eight piece band play fun and funky Afrobeat music. The concert will also feature West African drumming performed by students from the Oakland School for the Arts.
A Night in Africa is the culmination of a day of events at the Oakland School for the Arts. Prior to the concert, Oakland School for the Arts will open its doors to prospective students and parents interested in learning more about the school. Teachers and students will be on hand to answer questions, and student groups will be giving performances demonstrating the artistic offerings available at the school.
The Oakland School for the Arts, with its co-sponsors World Exchange and For Youth By Youth, hope that the concert will increase awareness of the connection between education, medicine and the arts. All three nonprofit groups work towards improving the lives of youth in these core areas.
Towards this goal, a portion of the proceeds from A Night in Africa will be donated to a new medical clinic in Uganda funded by World Exchange for Health and Human Services. The organization has sent medical supplies to ten different locations around the globe. This will be their first project in Uganda.
